Romans 8:11 reveals a wonderful truth – that Holy Spirit daily chooses to live in us, to clothe Himself with us. Our response? Colossians 3:14 we are to daily, clothe ourselves in love, in Jesus.
How are we to do that? First we must remember who we are.
Colossians 3:12 reminds us. Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved – we are the elect of God, we are holy, set apart for His purposes, and we are beloved, not because of what we have done but because of what He has done. This is the foundation on which we stand in order to live the life Christ died to give us. Settle this truth once and for all in your heart and your life will be transformed. Declare it out loud daily, “God has chosen me, I am holy, I am beloved.”
Once we own the truth of who we are, God tells us what to do next – we (not someone else) are to put on love. Colossians 3:14
What will this love look like? It will look like Christ. We will wear tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; we will bearing with one another, and forgive one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave us, so we also must do. Colossians 3:12-13
And when life happens, what are we to do?
Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colossians 3:15-16
Paul then summarizes how we are to do life as a Christian, “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:17
As Christ followers, we are in a relationship with God. Holy Spirit clothes Himself in us and we are to clothe ourselves in Him.
What if, every morning, we took time to sit with Holy Spirit and asked Him to fill us afresh, and then, we purposfully clothed ourselves in His Word, in His love, in Jesus Himself. (Colossians 3:14)
What if we daily, made a conscious decision and declared out loud, that we will serve Jesus’ purposes in every thought, word, and action, and then trusted Holy Spirit to help us live that out, one day at a time? What if we stopped trying to find love, stopped trying to be loved, but rather we just were love, like Our Heavenly Father.
I think it would change not only our lives, but the world as well.
