Eph 1:11 In Him we have obtained an inheritance……
Col 1:12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light…… simply qualified in the next verse that we have been taken out of the realm of darkness into His realm of light. Paul is using Old Testament covenant terminology, and applying it to the Gentiles in the New Covenant to reveal, that the gentiles now have equal access to the Father and are heirs to the inheritance he has promised his people.
When we think of an inheritance, depending on your background you either have no real interest or you rub your hands eagerly with much anticipation for what you are about to receive, and in this case you not looking at a plate of food. I have seen families divided over the avarice of an inheritance. However that is not the inheritance that I portray here.
God in His infinite wisdom has assigned angels to minister to the believers, who are to inherit ( eternal) salvation, Heb 1:14; acknowledging that salvation is an eternal promise and inheritance.
We take hold of our position in Christ. “I am the greatly loved child of a perfect heavenly Father”. He has qualified me for an incomparable inheritance that He has made available to everyone in His kingdom. This is the amazing grace of our now and yet to come inheritance in God our Father. We look forward to the eternal promised inheritance.
Some still think if we just belong to Jesus, give your life to Jesus, give your heart to Jesus and when you die you go to heaven, and that’s it……. Well ! that’s partly true, what’s missing is the ingredient of LIFE; that abundant life… That we live in, revel in and partake of for the sake of the Gospel. It is our inheritance now.
We need to develop a bit of a “Caleb” attitude…. Josh 14:12 so now give me this hill country, the inheritance that God promised to Caleb, he kept hidden in his heart until the time was right for him to receive and take hold of his promised inheritance. We have a promised inheritance ( Eph 1:11 and Col 1:12). If I could draw an analogy, when I give a gift you have to reach out and take hold of the gift, it’s yours.
What is our inheritance? May the Holy Spirit open our eyes to see the answer! It begins in this life. It is our heavenly reward being given to us even now. It is the presence of God. It is reaping eternal life back from the Spirit. It is being ‘filled’ with God’s joyful energy… it is living the abundant life.
